Leaders in the news industry are set to meet in Washington, DC, Thursday amid a dramatic decline in people’s trust in the media.
Research from Gallup, presented at Semafor’s summit on Innovating to Restore Trust in News, illustrates the decay:

The research examined trends across decades of polling on the subject, revealing two particularly stark findings.
First, the trend is driven largely by Republicans; the data show particularly steep drops connected to America’s presidential elections every four years, and that this periodic dip is accelerating in the Trump era. Younger Democrats, too, also show signs of diminished trust:

The second major finding is that the decline in trust in news isn’t just a feature of the broad decay in Americans’ trust in institutions — and is actually sharper and deeper than the decreases in trust in any other institution that Gallup measures has experienced:
