Apple and Meta said they would join forces to release a new open-weight AI model to run on high-end Macs, the latest sign of AI reshaping old tech rivalries and building new ones. The giants have been at odds for more than a decade: Meta has complained that Apple’s app store policies have cost it billions, while the Facebook owner’s CEO reportedly told his team to “inflict pain” on the iPhone maker.
By teaming up, they aim to offer a US open-weight model to compete both with rival Chinese offerings and the closed systems built by frontier labs Anthropic and OpenAI. “We’re excited for mommy and daddy to be playing nice again,” Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang told Axios.
